What Vigils Are

A vigil is someone posted at a station with an instrument, paying attention to something that may not need watching. Not guards — watchers. Not sentries — listeners. The station could be a radio telescope pointed at dead sky, a lighthouse automated since 1989, a fire lookout during off-season.

The instrument is essential — not for making music, but for listening. Tools that give shape to the particular quality of attention each station requires. You breathe differently with a bass harmonica than without one. You notice different frequencies.

Assignment continues until further notice. No relief scheduled.

Scan abandoned frequencies for trucker voices that might still be out there. Static as a form of company when the highways empty.

Fire Lookout (Off-Season)

Watch for fires that haven’t started yet from a tower built for watching. Dulcimer tuned to compass points because direction becomes musical when you’re lost.

Listen to concrete for vibrations that mean everything or nothing. The difference between signal and noise dissolves when you listen close enough.

Lighthouse, Automated Since 1989
04:07 shift · Foghorn
Sound warnings no one expects from a lighthouse that runs itself. Automated but still sounding, rhythm of warning become rhythm of being.

The Projectionist Stays Late
23:30 shift · Lap steel guitar
Attend to empty theater from projection booth. Steel sustains longer than the images it scores, presence that outlasts its audience.
